THANJAVUR: Two people were killed in a road accident involving a tourist van and a two-wheeler near Athirampattinam in Thanjavur district.
The deceased have been identified as S Muthu, 18, a native of Gandhi Nagar near Athirampattinam in the district and Shanmugasundaram, 39, of Pinnathur village in Tiruvarur district.
According to police, Muthu, a labourer, was returning from Athirampattinam town to his home riding his two-wheeler.
A group of people hailing from Pinnathur village were heading towards T Pallapatti in Dindigul district to attend a meeting.
The two-wheeler collided head on with the van near Pattukottai. In the impact, Muthu died on the spot. Shanmugasundaram who was sitting on the footboard of the van, was thrown on to the road and died on the spot. As many as 10 people who were travelling on the van also suffered injuries, police said.
Muthu was under the influence of alcohol and had been rash riding the bike, police sources said. On information, police rushed to the spot and sent the injured to Pattukottai Government Hospital.
Police also sent the bodies to the hospital for postmortem. Athirampattinam police registered a case and an investigation is on.
