Vellore: Action will be taken against parents of minor children spotted driving vehicles without driving licence, warned Tenkasi S Jawahar, principal secretary and transport commissioner, while participating in the regional level road safety meeting for officials of the composite Vellore district (Ranipet, Vellore and Tirupattur) and Tiruvannamalai district on Tuesday.
During analysis, compared to other factors, it was found that road accidents on arterial roads in towns and cities were because of minor school students riding two-wheelers without licence and flouting safety regulations, Jawahar said. Apart from taking action against the minors ,appropriate punishment and fines would be imposed on their parents too, he said.
Addressing the media, Jawahar said, “According to reports from road transport and highways department, government of India, in 2016, Tamil Nadu topped the number of road accidents with more than 17,000 fatal accidents. Following joint preventive and enforcement measures adopted by police, state highways, traffic, school education and transport departments, fatal accidents decreased to 10,000 in 2019. In the composite Vellore district, there were 870 fatal road accidents in 2016, but it decreased to 375 in 2019. Our vision is to create an environment with zero fatal accidents by 2030.”
“During the meeting, we discussed ideas with SPs and DSPs of all four districts and other department officials on how to enforce the helmet rule for both riders and pillions who are the most vulnerable road users,” he said. Out of the 3 crore registered vehicle users in Tamil Nadu, 2.45 crore were found to be two-wheeler users, he said.
When asked about the key strategies to reduce fatal accidents, Jawahar said the main reasons for road accidents is unskilled drivers and bad roads. While bad roads could be repaired after holding discussion with the authorities concerned, we plan to give intensified training and awareness to unskilled drivers, he said.
