COIMBATORE: Four students of a private paramedical college in Salem and driver of a sport utility vehicle (SUV) they were travelling in died on the spot when the SUV rammed the rear side of a truck near Avinashi in Tirupur district of Tamil Nadu on Thursday morning. Three students suffered injuries in the mishap.
The accident happened when a group of students were on their way to Ooty in the Nilgiris district from Salem.
The deceased have been identified as Rajesh, 21, Venkat, 21, Ilavarasan, 21, Vasanth, 21 and SUV driver Manikandan, 28.
Santhosh, 22, Karthi, 21, and Jayasurya , 22, who suffered severe injuries, have been admitted to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital.
In the wake of the state government declaring holidays for colleges and schools till March 31 to prevent spread of Covid-19, the eight students decided to visit Ooty. They hired an SUV and started from Salem in the early hours of Thursday. When they reached near Avinashi, the driver lost control of the SUV. The vehicle rammed the rear side of a cement-laden truck moving in front of it.
The Avinashi police rushed to the spot and sent the three injured students to CMCH. The bodies were sent to the Government Hospital in Avinashi for postmortem.
