COIMBATORE/ KRISHNAGIRI: Return of traffic on roads and opening of Tasmac shops have resulted in an increase in accident cases. Nine people died in separate incidents in Coimbatore and Krishnagiri districts on Friday.
The first incident occurred when N Vinith, 24, of Idayarpalayam near Kuniyamuthur in Coimbatore, and his friend M Shahrukh Khan, 25, of Pollachi, were heading towards Athupalam from Kuniyamuthur on a motorcycle after consuming liquor. “Both were drunk. Vinith was riding the motorcycle. He lost control over the vehicle and rammed the compound wall of a crematorium at Athupalam,” said a police officer.
In the second incident, a 60-year-old woman was killed and her 70-year-old husband injured after a truck hit the moped that they were travelling on at Pathuvampalli Pirivu in Coimbatore. The Karumathampatti police identified the deceased as S Rukkumani of Sangamanaickenpalayam.
Seven people died and three others sustained injuries in four road accidents in Krishnagiri district on Friday. In an incident near Kandikuppam on the Chennai-Bengaluru national highway, three people — Vignesh, 28, Kuppan, 60, and Chennaiya Chetty, 70, of Kappalvadi near Burgur — were hit by an unidentified vehicle while they were heading towards Bengaluru on a bike. All three died on the spot, a police officer said. They worked in a textile unit in Bengaluru, police said.
