The mangled remains of the SUVThe mangled remains of the SUVVILLUPURAM: Six people, including five members of a family, died on the spot and two children suffered injuries when a sport utility vehicle they were travelling in overturned and rolled into a sewage canal at Padhiri in Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu in the early hours of Thursday.
The deceased have been identified as C Murugan, 40, his wife Malar, 29, their daughter Muthu Manisha, 9, Murugan’s siblings C Murugaraj, 38, and C Sri Murugan, 35, and driver Raj. Murugan’s children Maya, 7, and Sathish, 6, suffered injuries. All of them were natives of Thisaynvilai village in Tirunelveli district, police said.
Murugan and his siblings owned a few hardware shops at Thandalam in Kancheepuram district. They had closed the shops due to the lockdown and gone to their village.
“The accident happened around 5.45am when they were returning to Thandalam from their native place,” said Tindivanam DSP Kanageshwari.
While crossing Padhiri village near Tindivanam, the driver lost control of the SUV. The vehicle overturned, rolled down into a sewage canal and hit a tree.
Villupuram superintendent of police S Radhakrishnan told TOI, “The Olakkur police rushed to the spot after being alerted by a man working at a nearby puncture shop. They rescued the injured children and retrieved the bodies in an hour-long operation.”
The injured children were admitted to Government Villupuram Medical College and Hospital.
It is suspected that the accident happened because of the drowsiness of the driver who had been driving the vehicle for more than seven hours. The police were conducting investigations.
