An awareness drive is being conducted by the Lucknow Police at major intersections to spread awareness amongst pillion riders on two-wheelers about wearing helmets.
At Hazratganj intersection, most of the pillions on two-wheelers were passing from the area without helmets. The traffic police stopped them and urged them to wear helmets along with the riders.
The pillion riders were also informed by the traffic police about the road safety measures and benefits of wearing helmets.
On the first day of the Traffic Awareness Month the cops in Lucknow focused on increasing awareness amongst the commuters.
Traffic cops also stopped cars passing from major intersections and urged people sitting next to the driver to wear seat belts.
Speaking to media, Inspector General (IG) Traffic Deepak Ratan said, “It is mandatory from today for both the rider and the pillion to wear helmets on two-wheelers across the state. Traffic cops are presently conducting an awareness drive but after a few days we will begin imposing fines against the violators. For not wearing helmet a fine of Rs 500 will be imposed for first violation, Rs 1,000 for second and Rs 3,000 for third violation. In case a person continues to violate traffic rules by not wearing helmet then after third time we will seize the vehicle and cancel the license.”
