KOLHAPUR: Six of a family, including two children and three women, were killed and two others injured in a road accident after the car they were travelling in collided with a cement-laden tanker near Velapur on Pune-Pandharpur road on Saturday morning.
Police said that the tanker was travelling in the opposite direction, adding that, the victims are residents of Vairag village in Barshi taluka of Solapur district and were on a pilgrimage tour. The driver of the tanker fled from the spot soon after the accident, said police.
The deceased have been identified as Shivraj Nagesh Falfale (38), Dinanath alias Babaso Nagesh Falfale (34), Vanita Shivraj Falfale (30), Utkarsh Shivraj Falfale (9), Sahyadri Babaso Falfale (6) and Parvati Mahadev Falfale (80).
The injured —Puja Dinanath alias Babaso Falfale (28) and Utkarsha Shivraj Falfale (11) — have been admitted to the nearby Velapur primary health centre.
According to police, the car was travelling from Pune to Vairag and the tanker was heading towards Pune. At around 8 am, both the vehicles collided with each other near Velapur, killing six people.
Police said that the impact of the collison was such that both the vehicles were thrown apart due to the force.
“Immediately after the accident took place, some alert passers-by informed us and we rushed to the spot. The people gathered at the spot helped us in removing the deceased and the injured people from the vehicle. All were immediately rushed to the hospital. The driver of the tanker fled from the spot. We have launched a search operation for him and are gathering his whereabouts. We are also searching for the owner of the tanker to get more details about the driver,” a police officer investigating the case said.
